ABB Group will install internal and external telecommunication systems on three Statoil projects in the North Sea for $US60 million ($A66.86 million).

Communication is key

The company signed contracts with shipyards in South Korea that are building offshore installations for the Aasta Hansteen, Gina Krog and Mariner fields.

Mariner and Gina Krog will host fixed, steel-jacket platforms, with the topsides to be constructed at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering yard, while Aasta Hansteen will boast a single-cylinder Spar platform, with the topside module constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The telecommunication systems installed by ABB will be tailored to Statoil's requirements concerning design and documentation. They could include things as wide ranging as computer networks, surveillance equipment, radio systems, meteorological services, radar systems, aeronautical navigation and communication-based safety systems.
