Fuel cell carrier ship developed by Wilhelmsen

SCANDINAVIAN ocean transport company Wallenius Wilhelmsen has developed a large carrier ship conc...

The concept ship the Orcelle has been developed by a team of naval designers and environmental experts and will release no emissions from its renewable energy power sources.

Photovoltaic panels are mounted in three sails, while 12 fins contain wave power generation equipment. The remainder of the power will be provided by fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen chief executive Nils Dyvik said that a ship with some of the Orcelle’s features may be launched by 2010, but a fully-equipped version might not exist until closer to 2025.

“We believe that the shipping industry as a whole must put more effort into developing sustainable deep-sea transportation solutions. Wallenius Wilhelmsen is determined to be at the forefront of these efforts, as our three-year sponsorship of the World Wildlife Fund to help protect and preserve marine life on the high seas demonstrates,” said Dyvik.
