WA to switch on the power

FINAL construction has begun on power stations in the Western Australian towns of Laverton, Menzies and Gascoyne Junction after the delivery of pre-assembled modules.

The power stations need to pass a number of pre-commissioning tests to prove their reliability before they can be connected to town power supplies.

The first test will be held in Menzies this month, followed by Laverton and Gascoyne Junction in February.

The network design for the new Marble Bar power station is also nearing completion and a preferred bidder has been selected to install a temporary facility to provide for the energy requirements of the town while the existing power station is decommissioned.

The site will then be cleared, allowing for the new power station to be constructed at the same location. A tender for the sale and removal of the existing power station will be issued in February 2006.

Meanwhile, WA power utility Western Power is drawing up the network design to connect the new Nullagine power station to the existing power distribution network.

The utility has encountered some delays with accessing the land for the new facility, but all necessary approvals have now been granted.
