Honeywell powers process savings

The Honeywell solution will deliver predictable, flat maintenance costs on the power supplier's process automation system and guaranteed lifetime support.

The Delesto plant is a 50-50 joint venture between Netherlands-based Akzo Nobel and German-based Essent.

The natural gas-powered, combined-cycle plant provides process steam, electricity, compressed air and water to various customers located at the nearby Delfzijl chemical park, with the balance of electric power being exported to the public grid.

The main customer for electricity is Akzo Nobel's chlorine production plant, while the steam is mainly used by Akzo's salt production facility.

Under the LifeCycle Management contract, Honeywell Process Solutions will implement its Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), providing ongoing service support and maintenance to Delesto until 2022.

Honeywell's involvement with the Delesto plant extends back to the 1980s, providing key elements in the plant's current process control system, ensuring temperature, pressure and flow of the steam remains at the right levels to generate the required power and steam for the nearby chemical plants and national grid, operating 24/7.

Delesto's major process challenge was the implementation of a long-term evolutionary lifecycle management program that could enable upgrades to the process control system before they became obsolete.

The lifecycle/upgrade project required a solution that could enhance its business continuity, minimise downtime and reduce long-term life cycle costs.

"We selected Honeywell over competitive offerings because of its strong track record with us over a number of years and because the new contract will enable us to generate significant cost savings," said Marcel Bartelink, managing director, Delesto.

"A major benefit of Honeywell's technology is that it's completely interoperable with previous versions of its platforms as well as other vendor's systems. It means interconnectivity isn't an issue and it prevents existing systems from becoming obsolete."

Honeywell Process Solutions will charge Delesto a fixed annual fee to maintain and replace obsolete parts and deliver services to maintain and guarantee the availability of the plant's processing systems.

The nature of the contract allows Delesto to control its maintenance costs and accurately plan its financial outlay for LifeCycle Management over the period of the contract.

"We are delighted to continue our long term partnership with Delesto, a valued customer since the 1980s … Our pioneering technology and service expertise provides key process automation benefits to the power industry, guaranteeing high levels of business continuity and efficiency as well as empowering suppliers with the ability to control and reduce operational costs in the long term," said Paul Orzeske, vice president and general manager, Honeywell Process Solutions, EMEA.

The Delesto plant celebrated nine years of operations without lost time for injury last December.
