Powerco boss heads back across the Tasman

POWERCO chief executive Steven Boulton is leaving New Zealand and returning to Australia to take ...

Boulton spent five-and-a-half years at the helm of the New Plymouth-headquartered energy network company.

Last year Powerco was taken over by Brisbane-based Prime Infrastructure, which is now shifting to Sydney and renaming itself Babcock & Brown Infrastructure.

“The new ownership opened up new opportunities for me, but my executive role in Sydney is yet to be fully defined,” Boulton told EnergyReview.net today.

Late last year, Prime finished a complete takeover of Powerco for about NZ$1.8 billion after earlier buying the combined 53.65% interest of key stakeholders New Plymouth District Council, Taranaki Electricity Trust and Powerco Wanganui Trust.

“The time I have spent at Powerco has been interesting," Boulton said.

"I have made what I believe to be a significant contribution and I have achieved the objectives set by the Powerco board in early 2000 when I started.”

He hinted that Powerco might not have to advertise internationally for a replacement – as it did when previous chief executive Simon Moutter left for Telecom New Zealand in 1999.

“There some very capable executives already within Powerco and there are a range of internal options relating to general managers and their roles within the organisation,” Boulton said.
