The US$575,000 plant was procured with funds provided by the Indian central government.
The machine, imported from Spain, makes use of the constituents of sewage gas to generate around 3,500 to 4,000 units per day. It also helps reduce green house gas emissions and prevents pollution brought about by the disposal of untreated waste. The best part of it all is that it saves the SMC money.
“By generating electricity through this way, power bill has reduced by nearly Rs 3.5 lakh [US$7,735] per month,” said SMC commissioner G.R. Aloria.
The plant, the first of its kind in India, is located at SMC’s sewage treatment plant in Anjana.
