Two grid operators, five generators and four customer-facing companies will now take over State Power, which controlled 46% of China's generating capacity and 90% of the country's massive electricity distribution grid.

The break-up of State Power's demise is another step in the gradual opening up of China's state-controlled industries following the nation's entry into the World Trade Organisation late last year.
