WA environmental watchdog gives power plant OK

Perth Energy Pty Ltd plans to build a 120-megawatt turbine power plant fuelled by natural gas in Kwinana, an industrial suburb south of Perth.

Environmental Protection Authority chairman Bernard Bowen said nitrogen oxide emissions from the plant would be monitored to ensure they were kept below allowable limits. He added that in terms of greenhouse gas, the plant would be far more efficient than existing plants supplying power to the south-west.

A spokesman for the Conservation Council said he doubted whether the Kwinana area could accommodate more heavy industry because of existing problems with air quality, noise pollution and the impact on Cockburn Sound
