Indonesia's energy assets could be targets: Minister

Indonesian energy assets such as power stations as well as vital oil and gas facilities could be the next targets for terrorists, according to Indonesia's top security minister, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Speaking to reporters in the wake of the Bali bombing, in which 188 people have died to date, Mr Yudhoyono said potential targets could include the Paiton power plant in East Java, the Bontang gasfield in East Kalimantan, the Arun natural gas operation in Aceh and the Caltex oilfields in Riau province.

National police chief General Da'i Bachtiar also confirmed there was "intelligence input" saying that there will be attacks on these vital installations. Last year the Indonesian oil and gas industry earned $US5.6 billion or about 22% of Indonesia's total exports making it the nation's largest earner of foreign currency.

Foreign oil and gas companies such as Caltex, ChevronTexaco and ExxonMobil said they were operating normally however they have beefed up security in wake of the bombings. Indonesia's largest crude producer PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia also said it has increased security at its onshore oil fields in Riau province. Energy companies are among the biggest foreign investors in Indonesia.
