Wesfarmers/Japanese team up for power bid

Diversified industrial group Wesfarmers has teamed up with a Japanese power utility to propose to jointly develop a coal-fired power station in Collie.

Wesfarmers said it has signed a letter of intent with J-Power, Japan's largest electricity wholesaler, and would lodge an expression of interest to deliver an additional 300 megawatts of base load power for Western Power.

Western Power has called for expressions of interest to provide 300MW of base load power from 2007, under the second stage of the Gallop Government's power procurement process. The deadline for lodging for expressions of interest is today.

The cost of the project is estimated to be $450 million.
