Electricity demand in Malaysia on the up

Despite an already hefty 5.8% increase this year to around 12,637MW, the numbers show that by 2005, Malaysia could make use of up to 14,531MW of electricity per year.

What this means is that power generation has become big business in the country. In order to meet to growth in peak demand, electricity generation capacity was increased to 18,562MW this year, with the bulk of capacity expansion taking place in the Peninsular. Power generation in 2000 was only 12,645MW.

In related news, the Malaysian government is keen to continue its support for a proposed Trans Asean Gas Pipeline and the Asean power grid projects in order to ensure that the region will have adequate energy supply security.

In fact, the establishment of the Asean Gas Centre in the country is being seen as a move to facilitate the implementation of the massive pipeline project. The Centre will serve as a "strategic technical and information resource and capacity building centre."
