Esso spokesman, Mr Chris Welberry said the company's main concern was the proposal to use a single metal cable, or monopole, on the seabed and seawater for a return current. Last week, the oil giant presented its submission to the 'Joint Assessment Panel'.
Other operating companies have also expressed concern over the potential acceleration of corrosion due to the electrical fields. Duke Energy is concerned over the impact of the electrical current on their proposed gas pipeline to Tasmania.
The $500 million project aims to link Tasmania to the National Electricity Grid and is being supplied by UK-based National Grid International.
