New Canning Basin prospect: Oil Basins

OIL Basins and partner Backreef Oil have uncovered a new prospect at the Emika structure after finalising re-mapping on the Drilling Reservation 9 (DR9) permit in the Canning Basin, Western Australia.

Re-mapping of Emika has defined a deeper test than previously presented, Oil Basins said.

As a result, the operator Backreef Oil plans to drill Emika-1 to 2400m total depth, compared with the previous 2000m total depth, the company added.

The Emika prospect covers 18 square kilometres and would test the crest of the Betty Sandstone structure.

According to Oil Basins, the previous operator, Socdet, mapped gross recoverable reserves of 45 million barrels in the Betty Formation.

Oil Basins is expected to pay about $800,000 of the estimated $2.7 million well costs.

Backreef expects to contract the Australian Drilling Services Rig 6 to drill Emika-1 in the third or fourth quarter of 2008.
