As of yesterday, the Abraj Rig 204 was drilling the well ahead at a depth of 1673m in an 8 ½ inch hole in the Huqf Formation.

“The primary and secondary objectives penetrated in the Permian to Cambrian interval exhibited oil shows and increased gas readings from drill cuttings,” Oilex said.

“Upon reaching total depth, currently prognosed to be at approximately 1900 metres, a comprehensive wireline logging program will be carried out to evaluate the anomalous zones encountered and to determine whether production testing is warranted.”

Sarha-1 is targeting between 6 million and 40 million barrels of oil resource potential.

Following this well, the JV will drill the Ghadaq-1 well in the western province of conventional plays and Alyanbou-1, in the frontier area on the northern salt wall trend.

Ghadaq-1 is targeting 5-30MMbbls of oil potential, while Alyanbou-1 is aiming at 10-375MMbbls.

Four more wells are planned for the third quarter of 2008 on locations that will depend on the results from the initial three-well program.

A further four wells are due for drilling in late 2008 and the first quarter of 2009.

Oilex (operator – 25%) and its partners Videocon (25%), GAIL (25%), Hindustan Petroleum (12.5%) and Bharat Petroleum (12.5%) have been working towards an exploration program in Oman since winning Block 56 in July 2006.
