The well is about 2.5km southwest of the Ghobata-1 exploration well, which intersected a 100m residual oil column in the Qishn Clastics before it was plugged and abandoned in January this year.
West Ghobata-1 has a planned total depth of 2300m and is aimed primarily at Qishn Clastics with secondary objectives in the Lam, Kuhlan sandstone and fractured basement.
Current participants in Block 49 are CCC (42.67%), Oil Search (42.33%) and The Yemen Company (15%).
Canada's Virgin Resources is drilling West Ghobata-1 and Balharak North-1, the next well in Block 49, as part of a farm-in agreement.
Oil Search is fully carried by Virgin for the drilling of the two wells.
Meanwhile, Oil Search is drilling ahead at the Raheek-1 and West Zeuit-X1 wells in Egypt as well as the Arakubi-1A sidetrack well in Papua New Guinea.
The company has also drilled the Korobosea-1 exploration well in PNG to a depth of 1250m and is running logs before it continues drilling to its planned total depth of 2182m.
