As of yesterday, co-venturer Cooper Energy said the well had been drilled to the first casing point at a depth of 696m, where operator Beach was preparing to run the 9 5/8-inch casing.
The Callawonga-2 well is primarily targeting the Namur Sandstone reservoir, to provide an up-dip south-western drainage point in the oil field.
Callawonga-2 is expected to take 14 days to drill and complete, and will be followed by Callawonga-3 and 4.
The three wells are targeting 2.58 million barrels of recoverable oil reserves.
Callawonga, which started production last November, was one of two new oil discoveries made in 2006 in PEL 92, in which Beach holds a 75% stake and Cooper holds 25%. The other is Silver Sands, found in May.
In June, Cooper said the joint venture decided to drill more appraisal wells after 3D seismic interpretation suggested the field was much larger than previously thought.
