The Melbourne-based company said yesterday that it spudded Alberton-1 well in PEP 158 – a follow-up to core holes drilled in the 1980s to investigate the area’s coal potential.
Near the Alberton township, the coreholes encountered laminated clay stones similar to low-grade oil shales, Lakes said.
Alberton-1 will test those clay stones, as well as its primary target, the Strzelecki Formation.
