During drilling, fluorescence was observed in a thin sandstone in the upper part of the Aptian formation at a depth of 3831-3834m. Apart from this, no other shows were observed.

Once wireline logging finishes, Baraka said operator CNPC International would set a 5½-inch tie-back liner to total depth.

The partners will assess the result of Heron-1 and its implication for the prospectivity of Block 20, after which they will hold a meet early next quarter to decide on the way forward.

The land-based drilling campaign is the first in the country in recent years.

Following Heron-1, CNPCIM will use the rig to drill an exploration well in neighbouring Coastal Block 12, in which Baraka does not have an interest.

Interests in Heron-1 are CNPC (65%) and Baraka (35%).
