Tomcat oil shows being assessed: VicPet

VicPet yesterday said the JV carried out a second drill stem test over the weekend over the interval 1468-1489m to further evaluate oil shows observed in the primary objective, the Mid Namur Sandstone.

The test tool plugged immediately on opening, so the test was unable to provide any extra information to that obtained from DST-1 on the mid Namur oil zone.

The well was then drilled to a total depth of 1587m and wireline logging began, the company said.

Initial analysis of the electric logs indicate a gross oil zone in the mid Namur Sandstone over the interval 1476-1494m with an interpreted oil-water contact at 1494m. VicPet said further evaluation of the mid Namur Sand oil zone with wireline logs and side wall cores is now in progress.

During DST-1, a strong blow was observed at the surface but no fluids reached the surface and on shutting the well in for pressure build-up information, the packer seat was lost, the company said.

However, on the basis of fluids recovered in the mud and the flowing pressure data, it is estimated that there was an influx of about 24 barrels of oil during the main four-hour flow period. This influx equates to an estimated initial flow rate of 144 barrels of oil per day (bopd).

“Analysis of the short period of pressure data prior to losing the packer seat suggests that reservoir damage due to drilling fluids may have occurred,” VicPet said.

Wilpinnie-4 is being drilled to test a combined structural/stratigraphic trap with a closure of some 440 acres (178 hectares) spanning the PPL 93 and PEL 115 permit boundaries. It is being drilled to a total depth of 1586m.

The primary target is the Jurassic Mid Namur reservoir.

The well is about 200m northwest and updip of Wilpinnie-3 drilled by Santos in 1996. Wilpinnie-3 intersected an oil-saturated Jurassic Mid Namur Formation sandstone reservoir and on DST, flowed at 785bopd day before declining to 41bopd and 20 barrels of water per day.

The Wilpinnie-4 structure has potential oil in-place of 7.5 million barrels (P50) and potential recoverable reserves of 3.5MMbbl (P50). The Tomcat Prospect is interpreted from seismic data to have the potential to contain recoverable oil in the range of 3.6-5.7MMbbl, if oil is present.

The PEL 115 JV is comprised of operator VicPet, Impress Energy and Roma Petroleum. Participants in the PPL 93 JV are Santos, Delhi Petroleum and Origin Energy Resources.

Under the terms of the farm-out agreement, the PEL 115 JV is paying 100% of the cost of drilling Wilpinnie-4 in the Wilpinnie North Block of PPL 93. In the event Wilpinnie-4 is declared a commercial oil producer, the PEL 115 JV will earn a 50% interest in the block.

VicPet said following the drilling of Wilpinnie-4, the PPL 93 JV has an option to farm-in and earn a 50% interest in the Tomcat Prospect mapped in PEL 115.

Interests in the Wilpinnie North Block of PPL 93 are operator Santos with 33%, Origin (6.595%), Delhi (10.105%), VicPet (20%), Impress (20%) and Roma (10%
