Arwon-1 is in PEL93, about 55km south-west from the Moomba oil and gas facilities and 2.5km north-east of the Worrior oil field. The selection of target zones was modelled largely on Worrior’s hydrocarbon-bearing areas, but despite its proximity to Worrior Arwon-1 has proved to be a very different well.
“We went in with high expectations of success but the Patchawarra, Hutton and Birkhead formations had no significant hydrocarbons,” Cooper Energy CEO Michael Scott told ERN.
“But there have been gas shows in the Epsilon formation, which lies above the Patchawarra. Epsilon is dry in Worrior so we weren’t even targeting it.”
There were also oil shows in the McKinley formation target area. Initial tests showed a 40 barrels per day capacity and the operator, Stuart Petroleum, plans to retest this zone. The company will also run a drill stem test over the interval 1742-1755 metres in the Epsilon formation to test gas shows and a log anomaly.
Interests in Arwon-1 are Stuart Petroleum 88.8% and Cooper Energy 11.2%.
