The company encountered gas charged sands lying immediately above the target coal seam, which will be evaluated on wire-line logs upon completion of the well, although the discovery has already enhanced the economic viability of any future development.
Luton-2 is the third well of a six well program in the Northern Bowen Basin for Sunshine Gas, targeting the Bandanna and Mantuan coals that were intersected by Luton-1.
In Luton-1, the uppermost Bandanna coal seam at 155m produced a 230 unit gas peak and the main Mantuan coal seam, 7m thick at 514m, produced up to 2,500 units of gas. A deeper conventional gas objective will be tested at another time.
Sunshine Gas said the target coal seams in the Luton Prospect region are laterally extensive meaning any success could potentially yield substantial volumes of gas.
