The company re-entered two wells over the weekend, Habanero-1 and Habanero-2 in GEL98, with Habanero-2 reaching a depth of 1860m in the 12 ¼ inch hole section.
Geodynamics (GPS) plans to test the concept of pumping down cold water to be heated underground, before returning it to the surface as steam to power an electricity turbine. The company estimates that the latent thermal energy is equivalent to 50 billion barrels of oil.
Now the company has launched the new power cycle, called KCS112, to further optimise hot fractured rock (HFR) geothermal electricity output. As such, it is ideally suited for the expected geothermal brine temperatures from the Cooper Basin HFR geothermal electricity project.
Geodynamics said heat balance modelling has shown that KCS112 can produce 5% to 10% more power than the existing KCS cycles.
The patent is to be held jointly by GPS and Recurrent Engineering LLC of California (the licensor to GPS of Kalina Cycle Technology). Patents will be applied for in other countries. GPS and Recurrent have granted each other a royalty free licence to use KCS112 and will share royalty revenue from third parties on a 50/50 basis.
GPS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Geodynamics formed to implement Kalina Cycle applications in waste heat and conventional & HFR geothermal electricity production.
Implementation of Kalina Cycle application will lead to an increase in power output (improved efficiency) and a reduction in CO2 emissions.
