DRILLING

Santos exploration banking on Otway

Santos Ltd is looking to tap into the growing potential of the Otway offshore basin as part of its extensive 2003 drilling program.

The recent company exploration quarterly has outlined the upcoming drilling plan with an early focus on Indonesia before moving back to Australia and the US.

Three wells in two of its 45% owned Sampang and Bawean PSCs in East Java gives Santos its Asian exposure before it returns to concentrate on its Australian acreage.

The main target for the company will be the Otway basin where it predicts the gross resources potential to be around 610 million barrels of oil equivalent from three wells, almost four times the expected gross potential from all of the remaining wells.

Santos has an 80% interest in two of the wells, Lead K and Lead G, targetting 260 mmboe and 33.3% in the Amrit well with 350 mmboe.

Santos plans to drill one US well per quarter, according to the drilling schedule.

The plan includes 26 wells for a total expenditure of $146 million, one third of the wells will be drilled in areas where Santos does not currently have any production.
