DRILLING

Second Indonesian gas discovery for Amerada Hess

The Tanjung Aru PSC in the Makassar Strait in Indonesia has yielded its second discovery for Amerada Hess.

The Papandayan 1 well was drilled to a total depth of 8,080 feet and abandoned as an untested gas discovery. The well is located approximately 9 miles west of Halimun 1, the first discovery, in around 1,820 feet of water.

Both wells were targetting Late Miocene and Pliocene sandstones as primary objectives. In each case the Upper Miocene primary objective was interpreted as a basin floor fan that was however found to be mud rich.

Instead, the Lower Pliocene secondary objective, interpreted as canyon fill, contained multiple gas bearing sands in both wells. Both wells were drilled in a location optimal to the Miocene fan, and so the significance of the Pliocene reservoir is now being re-rated.

This latest well lies in the northern part of the block and is located in little-explored waters at the southeastern margin of the Mahakam Delta.
