Eastern Star wraps up Bibblewindi fraccing

COAL seam methane junior Eastern Star Gas says it has finished fracture stimulating all 10 wells at its Bibblewindi Production Pilot in the Gunnedah Basin permit PEL 238.

The program was completed earlier than expected and substantially under budget, even though fraccing the Bibblewindi-10 monitor had not been included in the original program and budget, the Sydney-based company said.

Each of the nine fracture stimulations successfully placed either the planned or a greater volume of sand than expected, it added.

Once all wells have been cleared up by the natural flow back of formation water, they will be equipped with pumps and sequentially placed on production test.

De-watering of the Bohena seam will occur before the wells are placed on natural gas production, which will be measured to obtain independent gas reserves certification next year.

After this, the joint venture, in which Eastern Star is operator with a 65% stake and Gastar Exploration has 35%, will look to negotiate gas sales contracts.

The Bohena Project Area, covering 260 square kilometres in PEL 238, contains up to 3700 petajoules of gas-in-place in coal seams of the Late Permian Black Jack Formation and the Early Permian Maules Creek.

PEL 238 is believed to contain one of the largest onshore natural gas accumulations in Australia. Alone it totals 17,000PJ (17 trillion cubic feet) of gas-in-place in the two coal seams that are over 10m thick in each of two coal-bearing formations.
