Tibone said Botswana had two thirds of all Africa’s coal resources and it was only now apparent that the country held huge potential for CBM production.
“Exploration work on coalbed methane is only just beginning and we are keen to attract Australian companies expert in this area,” said Mr Tibone.
“Development of this gas resource could lower our dependence on imported fuel energy as well as turn us into a net exporter of energy into the South African market.”
Tibone also put Australian explorers on notice, saying the country would shortly release its first on-line geological information system, which would reduce permitting times for both prospecting and mining licences.
The minister also appealed for Australian diamond and base metal explorers to pursue mining opportunities in Botswana.
