ENE to build 32MW coal seam methane plant

In a sign of the growing maturity of the Australian CBM market, Energy Developments Ltd (ENE) is set to begin work on a nominal 32 megawatt waste coal seam methane (WCSM) power plant at the German Creek coal mine.

The project is located 800 km north west of Brisbane, Queensland, and will be developed in conjunction with Anglo Coal.

The project marks a turn around for the company after it was awarded $15.47 million in federal funding in 2001, under the greenhouse gas abatement program, to build an 11MW plant at the same site.

The plant would have used ENE's carburetted gas turbine technology but now the company has been forced to re-submit plans for approval outlining the benefits of switching to conventional WCSM.

The new project will offer an increase in power generated and greater results in greenhouse gas abatement, equivalent to 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Pending approval the plant is able to reach full commercial operation by late 2004.
