"Biodiesel represents an important part of a long-term energy plan designed to increase the nation's fuel supply and reduce our dependence on foreign oil," said ATA president and chief executive Bill Graves.
ATA is working with the United States National Biodiesel Board to promote the use of biodiesel and ensure its incorporation in the national diesel fuel standard.
The policy has won high-profile support from country singer Willie Nelson, increasing traffic at the recently developed BioTrucker.com website.
The ATA has been revising its fuel policies to combat rising fuel prices and help develop a comprehensive national energy plan.
The organisation said it had an integral role to play in the development of any national energy plan, as it claims trucking is solely responsible for the goods received by over 80% of all US towns and communities.
The ATA said it expects the trucking industry to pay a record US$85 billion for diesel fuel in 2005, a $23 billion increase compared with its estimates in 2004.
