Qatar clings to LNG leader status

This reserves position contrasts with Queensland's CSG-to-LNG scene in particular, with the Santos-led Gladstone LNG project long seeking third party gas supply deals. There was always some scepticism over the longevity of various CSG fields in the state too as the sweet spots are targeted first.

"Qatar has enough gas reserves to maintain production at current rates for 138 years" QNB said in its recent economic commentary.

"Looking forward, Qatar is expected to maintain its dominant role in the global hydrocarbon sector.

"Global demand for clean energy is expected to continue rising, and Qatar is a leader in the LNG market."

Earlier this month the International Energy Agency flagged that Australia could potentially overtake Qatar in 2017, although this would depend on how quickly the latest crop of projects ramp up.

"After Wheatstone LNG, Prelude FLNG and Ichthys LNG are also brought on line and reach plateau, Australia's LNG export capacity will grow by another 28 billion cubic metres to reach 116bcm per year," IEA said in its Medium-Term Market Report of 2015.

"The country will then be the world's largest LNG exporter."
