"Based on the current market outlook AGL has decided that the Torrens Island A station will be mothballed in 2017," AGL group general manager, merchant energy, Anthony Fowler said.

"This decision will be reviewed if market conditions change materially."

He said AGL would start discussions with the workforce about the future consequences.

The four older "A station" units will be mothballed and have a total of 480 megawatts of capacity.

Fowler said they were taken out of service between July and September this year without any supply impact on the state's consumers.

The remaining four units have a combined 800MW of capacity.
