The Pilbara Institute Mechanical Apprentice Project will see new mechanical teaching equipment, including metal lathes, metal milling machines and surface grinding machines installed at the Institute's Karratha campus.
It is hoped this will improved education outcomes by making it easier for trainers to replicate real-world conditions.
Western Australian Minister for Energy and Training Peter Collier said it was pleasing to see a public/private venture being formed to enhance the knowledge base of the region's apprentices.
"This project is a great example of industry and training providers working together," he said.
"Public private partnerships like this provide an innovative way of sharing expertise, experience and resources to address the training needs of the Pilbara community."
Funding for the project has been provided by the North West Shelf joint venture, led by Woodside and including BP, Chevron, Japan Australia LNG and Shell.
