WA energy minister Alan Carpenter made the announcement yesterday, saying state agencies had achieved more than half of the savings in 2004-2005.
"This is the third year of the Energy Smart Government Program and we continue to see great results due to the continued efforts of many agencies," Carpenter said.
"In 2004-05, agencies reduced their overall energy costs by $4.3million."
Carpenter said that in the last financial year, government agencies had reduced their energy use by 121,415 gigajoules, avoiding 22,170 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Under the Energy Smart program, the State Government sets across-the-board energy reduction targets for its agencies each year, aiming for a 12% energy reduction by 2006-2007.
Carpenter said the target for the 2004-05 period was an 8% reduction, while the results for 60 of the 61 participating agencies fell just short at 7.8%.
"This compares with the 6.4% improvement made in 2003-04 by those same agencies," he said.
Carpenter said 29 of the 61 agencies had already achieved the 12% target.
He said the WA Sustainable Energy Development Office would continue to work with agencies to improve their performance and further increase energy savings.
