EJR has been developing its New Energy Train concept in an attempt to incorporate a range of technologies that will reduce the environmental impact of its widespread operations.
The NE Train will use fuel cell technology as part of a low-emission diesel hybrid system that will also incorporate energy-saving features such as regenerative energy braking and low-exhaust systems.
The goal of the NE Train project is to achieve 20% energy savings compared to current diesel rail cars, with additional environmental benefits such as the use of electric power when leaving a railway station to reduce noise pollution.
Japanese news agency Jiji Press has reported that EJR will soon conduct operational tests of a one-carriage train equipped with two 65kW fuel cells, capable of speeds of up to 100km per hour.
According to the unconfirmed report, EJR may have fuel cell trains in operation as early as mid-2007.
