Two hours north-west of Manila, Subic Bay in the Philippines is a unique location undergoing some big changes. As part of an extensive upgrade of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone's electrical distribution system, Subic Enerzone Corporation installed an enterprise energy management system from Canadian firm Power Measurement.
The upgrade is part of Subic Enerzone's privatisation and rehabilitation of its 40-year-old power supply system.
The new electrical distribution system, equipped with the latest intelligent energy management technology, is intended to provide residents and businesses in the growing community with a secure, reliable and affordable source of high-quality power.
Subic Enerzone's rehabilitation project includes an upgrade of the Remy Field substation that supplies power throughout the Subic Bay central business district, installation of an overhead transmission line covering the 4.5km from the CBD to the Subic Bay International Airport, and replacement of dozens of outdated electricity meters.
In their place, a network of advanced Power Measurement ION(R) 7350 and ION(R) 7600 intelligent energy meters will monitor key power quality and reliability factors throughout the region's electrical distribution system, and report any areas of concern to engineering staff via the system's ION Enterprise energy management software.
Once the site of Asia's largest United States naval base, the Subic Bay Freeport Zone was buried under ash during the eruption of Mt Pinatubo in 1991, and has since been transformed into a growing centre of commerce, industry and eco-tourism, drawing visitors from around the world to experience the region's surrounding forests, beaches and coral reefs.
The addition of a reliable source of high-quality power is expected to make the Freeport zone an even more attractive destination for industry, tourism and investment.
Subic Enerzone is a consortium led by Davao Light & Power Company, Aboitiz Equity Venture, Mirant Philippines and San Fernando Electric Co. Subic Enerzone manages the power distribution system within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in the Philippines.
