PTT, Gulf Power ink gas sales agreement

THAI firm Gulf Power Generation and state-owned PTT Plc have signed a US$7.42 billion gas sales agreement that will see PTT supply natural gas to Gulf Power’s combined-cycle power plant at Kaeng Khoi, Saraburi province. The agreement is to run from 2007 to 2032.

“The agreement governs gas supply to two units of Gulf Power Generation in Kaeng Khoi, each with a capacity of 734 MW, due to start commercial operations in 2007 and 2008,” PTT said.

“Gas demand in the first year will total 125 million cubic feet per day, rising to 250 million cubic feet per day with the completion of the second unit.”

PTT plans to secure gas from the Gulf of Thailand over 25 years beginning in 2007 or after the completion of the Third Gas Pipeline.

“PTT is currently implementing its revised master plan for the Third Gas Pipeline to expand the capacity of its Western and Eastern Pipeline Systems, which would enable Thailand to secure up to 1,950 million cubic feet per day of gas from Myanmar and the Gulf of Thailand,” PTT president Prasert Bunsumpun said.

“The 1,950 million cubic feet per day gas supply volume is expected to replace [the] 47 million litres per day of fuel oil consumption. As the nation’s fuel supply agency, PTT plans procuring sufficient natural gas to meet the demand of the Kaeng Khoi power plant, both present and future, at reasonable prices and with the national supply security in its consideration.”
