China, Japan in East Sea talks

Japan’s new Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura and China’s Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing have agreed to hold further talks to resolve the dispute between their two countries over China’s Xihu Trough gas field project in the East China Sea.

The gas field that lies close to the border of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) claimed by Japan but not recognised by China.

According to Li, “It is important to have a frank and practical exchange of views. We want thorough dialogue to find a mutually acceptable way of resolving the issue.”

In response, Machimura said, “The talks [will] be of benefit to both countries [and] the possibility of joint development is expected to be raised at the counsellor-level talks.” The Japanese Foreign Ministry has confirmed such talks could begin as early as next month.
