Vopak delays storage plans

Vopak Terminals has been forced to postpone the December construction of its US$370 million stora...

Vopak Terminals Singapore MD Paul Govaart said, “The problem is the availability of steel, it’s as simple as that. We had difficulty acquiring steel because of the recent supply tightness. It’s a large amount we need.”

The delay affects the US$71 million first phase which would have seen the construction of 16 oil storage tanks (340,000 cubic metres total capacity) and 10 chemical storage tanks (31,200 cubic metres total capacity). Chiyoda Corp unit Chiyoda Singapore was recently awarded this contract.

The contract for Phase Two has yet to be awarded. According to Govaart, “Vopak is looking at a number of companies to handle the second phase.”

Once completed, the terminal will be Singapore’s fourth such facility and will have total oil storage capacity of 900,000 cubic metres and chemical storage capacity of 550,000 cubic metres. The facility will also have a twin jetty capable of handling tankers of 120,000 and 80,000 dwt.
