Indian gas grid proposal gets study funds

India’s Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) and the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) have inked a grant agreement to conduct a feasibility study on a National Gas Grid for the country.

In a statement GAIL said, “Under the agreement USTDA [will] provide a fund of US$690,000 while GAIL will contribute US$230,000 to assist in completion of the study which is set to be completed by June 30, 2006.”

“GAIL has already drawn up a blue print for setting up its ambitious National Gas Grid to link gas sources with consumption centres spread across the country with an estimated investment of around $US4.3 billion.

“The study will address the technical, economic, financial and environmental aspects of the national gas grid project along with issues concerning regulatory aspects,” it added.
