Rural Thailand goes solar

The Deputy Governor of Thailand’s Provincial Electricity Authority (PSA), Pongsakorn Tontivanichanon, has announced the implementation of a pilot program which would see 560 villages nationwide using solar power to generate electricity.

Speaking at an alternative energy seminar Pongsakorn said, “Household solar panels were initially installed on 98 houses in two villages, Mae Khee Mook and Thung Ton Ngiw, both in the northern province of Chiang Mai.”

“The PEA and researchers at Chiang Mai University are now assessing the results of the project, and studying the feasibility of providing alternative energy to the remaining villages in the programme [and] the PEA [will] then draw up a blueprint on the provision of electricity to remote areas of the country,” he added.

The PSA scheme is financed by the Fund for the Promotion of Energy Conservation.
