GAIL goes ahead with US$1 billion HBJ pipeline extension

Gas Authority (India) Ltd (GAIL) has announced it will be spending around US$1 billion to lay a natural gas pipeline project from Jagdishpur in Uttar Pradesh to Haldia in West Bengal. This new project will be an extension of the Hazira-Bijapur-Jagdishpur (HBJ) pipeline.

The new project is being seen as the ideal method to feed the natural gas needs of users in West Bengal and will see gas from the Dahej and/or Hazira LNG terminals in Gujarat being used.

In a statement GAIL Chairman and MD Proshanto Banerjee said, “There is strong demand in the eastern region from industrial users in West Bengal, Bihar [and] Jharkhand [and] the rights of usage [is] already with the company”

“[GAIL is] going ahead with the plan to set up the 850 km pipeline to feed [these] gas-starved eastern states. Moreover, we are also considering a spur line from there to Kolkata to feed this market,” he added.
