Sarawak village pioneers solar-powered street lighting

Kampung Peliau, a rural village in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, has been chosen to be a test bed for solar-powered, photovoltaic street-lamps. It is the first green lighting program being tried out in the East Malaysia state.

In a statement Malaysian Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said, “There [is] great potential for wider use of the lamps in areas, which had difficulties in getting power supply. This solar street-lamp technology have a lot of potential because it operates on renewable energy from the sun.”

“The solar-powered lamps [are] also mobile in nature and [can] be installed in many rural estates and plantations managed by the Federal Land Development Authority and other related agencies. My ministry will see whether this type of street lightings can be used in rural plantations and estates where electricity supply is still limited,” added Chin.

The solar street-lamps are from Zaiba Enterprise Sdn Bhd and IBC Solar Teknik Sdn Bhd JV. Zaiba Enterprise Business Development Director Abuzar Zainuddin Hipney believes the use of the street-lamps will be expanded to other parts of the country.
