In a statement Communist Party Secretary of Jilin City Zhu Zongmin said, “Everything’s at the beginning point. PetroChina Jilin PetroChemical Company has just begun talks with the Anglo-Dutch giant. Negotiations are just starting [and] the detailed stages haven’t begun yet [but] they are interested in the oil shale.”
“The two companies have already begun a pilot experiment in nearby Huadian City,” added Zhu who did not give any further details.
The Party Secretary of the Jilin Communist Party Wang Yunkun confirmed talks were underway but offered no further details beyond the fact Shell had asked for a press blackout on the matter.
Oil shale can is a brittle rock which can be converted into petroleum. China has the fourth largest deposits in the world and Jilin contains 56% of the country’s oil shale deposits.
