China to sell Pakistan a second nuclear plant?

Despite the controversy surrounding Pakistan's role in a nuclear technology black market, China is said to be close to selling a second nuclear plant to the Islamic nation following talks in Beijing last week. This new plant will be built at Chashma and will be sited next to the first nuclear power plant supplied by China in 1999.

Reports in the media indicate that the two countries have agreed upon the technical details for the sale and the 300 mW nuclear power plant, which is believed to be worth between US$600 million to US$700 million. The chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Pervez Butt, led the Pakistani delegation that completed the agreement.

Pakistani officials have stated that the two Chashma reactors would only be used for generating electricity.
