Pakistan to use canals in hydro plan

Pakistan's WAPDA has launched an ambitious plan to make use of all available water resources to meet the future power demand of the country. Its "Pilot Hydropower Projects" will make use of canals, falls and barrages in every province to generate electricity.

According to the company's chairman, Lt. Gen (Retd) Zulfiqar Ali Khan, said, "WAPDA, under vision 2025, has so far identified 600 suitable sites for small hydropower projects with low head hydels across the country to generate 1000-1500 megawatt electricity." This would be done with the involvement of private sector, admitted Zulfiqar.

In order to interest investors to invest in such projects, Zulfiqar revealed that WAPDA planned to run a pilot project in each province. Furthermore, WAPDA would assist the investor to identify suitable sites and prepare technical feasibility reports for the investors. Zulfiqar is confident that "successful demonstration, private sector will be invited to set up small hydropower projects any where in the country."

On top of that, as these projects require no long transmission lines for power distribution, the chairman is confident that system losses from any of the projects would be reduced.
