The company had originally wanted to build a pipeline to India and to market the gas there but the plan was quashed by the Bangladeshi government, despite the financial windfall it would have recouped from the deal.

The new plan is a stop gap measure at best. In a statement Unocal said, “[We remain] in favour of exporting gas by pipeline from Bangladesh to India and will continue to pursue the project.
