Mitsui Chemicals has admitted to fabricating figures and reusing old data in inspection reports it submitted to the Osaka municipal government on seven of its production facilities at the Osaka plant.
Like Nippon Oil, Mitsui Chemicals has suspended operations at the facilities concerned, which make ethylene, ammonium, urea and other chemicals. The ethylene plant has been closed since mid-July.
Government inspections are expected to take another three to four weeks to complete which is expected to severely affect the company's revenue as the naphtha cracker has a capacity to produce 455,000 metric tons a year of ethylene.
The revelations have forced the Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency into action with 48 petroleum and chemicals companies ordered to submit reports on their inspection procedures by Sept. 8.
The agency, under control by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, has said it will soon conduct on-the-spot inspections at facilities belonging to Nippon Oil and Mitsui Chemicals.
