The Indian government maintains that the project is still on but knowledgeable sources disagree and state that the project will be shelved.
Latest demand-supply projections show that India have sufficient gas supplies to match the expected 135-140 mm cmpd of gas demand and the positive new estimates on gas reserves - based the large number of gas discoveries-the largest in the last 25 years after the giant Mumbai High (Bombay High) oil field and Vasai (Bassein) gas field discoveries in 1976 and 1977 - make the pipeline an unviable project.
Another complication with the pipeline - should it go ahead - is the political implications of having a strategic natural gas pipeline running through Pakistan.
