CO2 leaves Santos dry off Java

Santos and partner BP have been disappointed by the discovery of two sizeable gas finds, only to have massive carbon dioxide results sink any hopes of making them commercial.

The Titan BP 1 well was plugged and abandoned after reaching a total depth of 791m. Drilling intersected 49m of gross gas charged sandstones of the Tawun Formation, however it contained 75% carbon dioxide and 25% natural gas.

The well is located 100 kilometres northeast of Kepodang Gas Field and 160 kilometres from Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.

The Calypso BP 1 well was also plugged and abandoned after reaching a total depth of 832m. Drilling intersected 42m of gross gas charged sandstones of the Prupuh Formation containing 80% carbon dioxide and 20% natural gas.

Calypso BP 1 is a wildcat exploration well located about 85 kilometres south southwest of the Titan BP 1 well.

The Bawean 1 PSC covers an area of 9,559 square kilometres and its addition to Santos' portfolio more than doubles the area of its Indonesian exploration acreage. As part of the buy-in Santos partly funded the two wells.

The Bawean PSC interests are BP Bawean Ltd (operator) 55% Santos Group 45%.
