Iraq looks at pipeline to the Gulf via Iran

In a surprising move, the Iraqi government has announced that it is looking into building a pipeline through Iranian territory in order to supply oil to the Gulf. Iran and Iraq had fought against each other – for eight years – in a bloody war during the 80s.

Iraqi oil minister, Ibrahim Bahr el-Ouloum, confirmed, “Negotiations between Iraq and Iran are under way to explore the possibility of building a pipeline to pump Iraqi oil to the Arab Gulf through Iranian territory.”

He also added, “Iraq’s oil production is expected to increase to 2 million barrels per day next month.”

However, Ibrahim denied he had met with Syrian officials concerning the reactivation of a pipeline that passes through Syria.

“The pipeline linking Iraq’s oilfields of Kirkuk with Syria’s port of Banias on the Mediterranean Sea is officially closed,” said the minister. This retort comes on the back of US claims that the pipeline had been unofficially re-opened.
