"The infrastructure package is being used to build water supply facilities, upgrade port facilities, and create service corridors and new roads," said State Development Minister Clive Brown.
The $630 million Burrup Fertilisers' ammonia project is the first to begin construction in the area. The plant will produce 760,000 tonnes of liquid ammonia per annum making it the world's largest ammonia facility. The majority of the ammonia will be for export to fertiliser manufacturers in India and other overseas destinations.
Methanex is expected to be the next project to begin work on the peninsula upon receiving confirmation of Commonwealth Government funding.
"LandCorp has appointed Henry Walker Eltin to undertake earthmoving and associated works to establish service corridors connecting the industrial sites to export facilities at the Port of Dampier," said Brown.
"In addition, Water Corporation's contractors - a John Holland-McConnell Dowell joint venture - are about to begin work on the first phase of a water supply system which will reticulate seawater for cooling and desalination. The joint venture will also build a commercial desalination plant in association with the Burrup Fertilisers project."
